For me, it all comes down to looking at the problematic behavior (in this case theft) from a big-picture, societal viewpoint, and one that emphasizes prevention. If we want to cut down on the number of thefts, and leave fewer people in the situation where stealing makes sense for them, what should we do as a society? I’m far less concerned with judging or even punishing individual people who are products of big social forces. Instead, I’m interested in changing the social forces so there are less people who have to steal or feel moved to steal.
