I think it’s vitally important in this context to mention that Halsey also is queer, biracial, and most crucially of all, has a mental illness she has been very open about. Her gender is absolutely a variable here, and people are much more likely to label a woman ‘crazy’ and to use that as a reason to ignore abuse allegations than they are with a man. But it’s many many times more likely for a woman with a mental illness to be written off in this way, specifically. Black women also get written off for being ‘crazy’ and overreacting to things very very often, and while Halsey isn’t read as Black by everyone by any means, she is half Black, and racism is definitely at play in all of this too. I think discussing gender as a factor here without also including these other forms of marginalization Halsey experiences oversimplifies things a lot.
