It’s unfair to say women have the power to stop patriarchal standards. It is hard to go against society’s prescribed rules. There are massive social, financial, professional, and romantic consequences to flouting these rules. I do not blame women for feeling that immense pressure and deciding that the only pragmatic thing to do is acquiesce to it.
