So a person can reflect on some of the potential reasons why an action is happening, instead of assuming it’s happening due to a personal failure of work ethic. By being internally curious and reflective, it’s easier to develop more accommodating adjustments to an assignment and approach a student with trust. Sometimes, not being a judgmental ass leads to the student feeling comfortable sharing why they were struggling in the first place, which then allows you to help in a more personalized way. Sometimes, it just leads to the professor not being an arrogant, incurious, inflexible arbiter of punishments, and that’s good too.
