Thank you for this. I grew up in a UMC church, and even got confirmed there as a tween. The culture there was so conflict averse, so quick to avoid controversy, tolerant in only the most quiet and glancing of ways… that isn’t real tolerance. If you won’t risk the rejection of bigots, well, you’ve already sided with them as a default. Everything that has happened in the past year has been a betrayal, a deep one, but I’m also so wounded and weary as to not be surprised.
