Thank you so much for your comment. It’s good to hear from someone who has succeeded academically by every measure. I certainly don’t just want this discussion to be led by bitter former academics or non-tenured faculty; I’m glad someone on the ‘other side’ sees some of the same issues. I think you’re right that the way academic, tenure-track professions are structured engenders really hierarchical thinking and a lack of meaningful community and it’s very dismaying (particularly to a social psychologist like me — we’re supposed to be all about dismantling abusive power structures…I thought). Thanks for sharing your piece about the lack of warmth in academic culture. Super interesting and relevant.
