I know that Steven Page has struggled with addiction and mental illness; I think those experiences breed feelings of isolation and otherness, and it may just be that the way he expresses those feelings is resonant to trans people like me. Or maybe Page has some trans feelings but doesn’t identify as trans. Or maybe Page is a closeted trans woman. It’s hard to speculate on this stuff, and I don’t want to do so in a way that violates a person’s privacy or armchair diagnoses someone with an experience that they either might not actually have, or might not want to share. I think there are a lot of reasons why a person might write about feelings of indecisiveness, depression, and bodily wrongness that are not being trans — and that writing can still really connect with a trans audience all the same.
