Thanks for sharing this piece with me the other day, James! It really gets to the heart of the values that are in tension with one another when it comes to religious freedom, homeschooling, and the liberty and rights of kids. The average k-12 public school is an oppressive environment in its own ways (here in Chicago I certainly can't ignore how cops & security guards in schools oppress our Black students and put them on the pipeline to jail for instance), but a child who is isolated and homeschooled in a fringe religious community has basically no one to look after their wellbeing and rights. I admire a lot of unschoolers and people who are working to reimagine education and make it more flexible for families, but that has to come with big reforms to how we think about family and community support and what society owes to kids, I think.
