This is exactly what friends of mine who work as dishwashers, servers, baristas have been telling me too. Earlier this fall especially, some told me they hated how moralized going out to eat was, when having customers was something they needed to survive. It created a dynamic where only the worst customers were willing to go out to eat. One friend told me they wished public messaging emphasized how important it is to follow safety protocols and tip lavishly, rather than just framing all dining as irresponsible. Now of course the curve is far far worse and the risk calculus is so different -- many of my friends who work in those areas wish they could quit but of course, they can't afford to.
