This is such a useful framework, and really helps me articulate my approach to gender, too. I often find myself explaining gender and “knowing” one is a particular gender using a pretty complicated narrative about how gender is so multifaceted and means so many distinct things to individual people and so how can we tell a trans person that their interpretation of that complicated mess isn’t okay when a cis person’s is? That is a little confusing to throw in a cis person’s lap though. This essay makes it easier for me to think about how I will discuss this in the future — your comment about gender ID being a sense of belonging to a multivalent category is so helpful and apt.
