Unfortunately, it's not just straight leftists, I don't think. I've heard many young LGBTQ people, usually white ones, say very glib, flippant things about HIV. There's this sense sometimes that it's "over" and a suitable thing to joke about. I have compassion for queer people who are in that position due to ignorance (I certainly absorbed a lot of horrible HIV/AIDs shock humor as a kid and teen and had to unlearn a lot), but it's also very frustrating to see the lack of awareness of where we've been and where we still are.
