I really appreciate what I understand to be the core of this book: how to actually survive! A disabled friend of mine and I were lamenting how there’s so many “disability influencers” who talk about the opportunities they get via social media and how hard they worked to create lives where they can, say, afford a power chair…and yet they feel completely disinclined to share just how they sculpted that life, online or offline. It’s a form of mutual aid to share with others ways to succeed in this capitalist hellscape, even if one’s exact way doesn’t work for everyone. Excited for the new book; congratulations!
You specifically thanking people who got the book from...certain websites...means a lot <3. I wouldn't have been able to access it otherwise, so thank you for being understanding :). Hopefully one day I can get my hands on a physical copy!
Devon…. I’m a trans person who read unmasking autism on the recommendation of my therapist and really resonated with it. I received an official diagnosis of autism TWO DAYS AGO and I’ve since started rereading your book. I’m in a bit of a daze about this new diagnosis but your words are helping me stay grounded. This news about your next book is so incredible, it’s going to be EXACTLY what I need. Thank you so much for sharing this with the world, you’ve helped me navigate some really confronting things. You’re an absolute gift to the world and I can’t wait to read it!!!
Unmasking Autism has been one of the most influential texts I’ve consumed since discovering I am AuDHD. The insights you shared about masking, unmasking, and gender bias really hit home for me. They helped me reframe the stereotypes I had internalised and allowed me to rediscover my own values.
I am currently showing my first solo art exhibition, 'Rediscovering Self,' and your work has been a huge inspiration, the themes played a big role in my creative explorations of who I am.
I’m in the middle of one of those (digital) advance copies and I’m digging it the most. UA was one of the books that helped clinch my self-recognition of my likely neurodivergence, and I’m really appreciating the practical side of Unmasking for Life — now that I know (better) who I am, the steps you’re outlining are looking like things I can do to move forward with confidence and without compromise.
